GDL525 is pleased to present
‘This Quiet Place is Fantastic’,
an exhibition of new works by sophie serber
opening Thursday 19 November, 3–7PM.
Drawing from her experience as a performer in the porn industry, serber's long-term project conceptualises proliferation of porn as akin to a cellular process of productive self-cannibalisation. Working across the histories of painting, sculpture and video, she researches the production and negation of consumptive desire in digital pornography, and its philosophical analogues in postmodern society.
The exhibition is accompanied by a text by Marija Cetinic. Graphic Design by Alex Walker, proofreading and editing Cleo TSW, wall design by Viktor Eichler, fabrication Ignacy Radtke.
sophie serber (b. 1993, Santa Cruz, CA) lives and works in Amsterdam. She explores the degradation inherent in interpretive perception, and works on control of the self within broader societal structures and power dynamics. Her experiments with thresholds of certainty stem from an interest in the relationship between belief and denial, and how it mirrors the courtship between aversion and attraction.
Her work has recently been shown at Groninger Museum, Groningen, NL; Nest Ruimte, The Hague, NL; bologna.cc, Amsterdam, NL; University of Otago, Otago, NZ; Mery Gates, NY, USA; Shore Gallery, Vienna, AT; Disneyland Paris, Melbourne, AU; and Vleeshal Center For Contemporary Art, Middelburg, NL.
